Two of the most popular questions I get from new clients in Bergen County are: "Should I get a HydraFacial?" and "Do I need a chemical peel?" The answer is always the same: it depends on your skin — and that's not a cop-out, it's the truth.
Both treatments can deliver incredible results. Both use professional-grade technology and active ingredients. But they work in fundamentally different ways, have different ideal candidates, and produce different outcomes. Understanding which one is right for you starts with understanding what's actually happening to your skin.
What is a HydraFacial?
The HydraFacial uses patented vortex technology to simultaneously cleanse, extract, and hydrate skin. Think of it like a vacuum and an IV for your face — it's pulling out congestion while simultaneously infusing skin with serums, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid.
There are three steps to the HydraFacial process: first, a gentle exfoliation loosens dead skin cells; then the vortex extraction removes debris from pores; finally, targeted serums are delivered deep into the skin. At The Skin Tune, I offer three tiers — Signature ($180), Deluxe ($249, which adds LED light therapy and a targeted booster), and Platinum ($299, which includes lymphatic drainage).
The key things to know about HydraFacials:
- ✦ Zero downtime — you can go back to your day immediately
- ✦ Immediately visible results — skin looks plumper, brighter, and more radiant right after
- ✦ Suitable for virtually all skin types, including sensitive skin
- ✦ Works beautifully as a maintenance treatment once your skin is already in good shape
- ✦ Results typically last 4–6 weeks with a good home care routine
"The HydraFacial is my go-to recommendation for clients who want an immediate glow, have a big event coming up, or are maintaining skin that's already responding well to their home care routine." — Kristen
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel uses active acids — alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), retinol, TCA, or Jessner's solution — to dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells and trigger controlled cellular turnover. The result is that your skin sheds its outer layers and reveals fresher, more even-toned skin beneath.
At The Skin Tune, I offer everything from gentle AHA/BHA peels with no downtime ($65) to advanced Retinol, TCA, and Jessner peels ($160) that require 3–7 days of healing. The right peel for you depends entirely on your skin type, concerns, and how much downtime you're willing to manage.
What makes chemical peels so powerful for corrective work:
- ✦ They address discoloration, scarring, and stubborn acne at a cellular level
- ✦ They stimulate collagen production for long-term skin improvements
- ✦ They produce cumulative results that deepen with a treatment series
- ✦ They can reach concerns that topical products and gentle treatments can't
- ✦ Results improve over 7–14 days as skin completes its renewal cycle
HydraFacial vs. chemical peel: the key differences

| When you see results | Immediately after treatment | Over 7–14 days post-treatment |

| Ideal frequency | Monthly or every 4–6 weeks | Every 4–8 weeks depending on depth |
| Price range at TST | $180–$299 | $65–$160 |
| Cumulative benefits | Yes — builds over regular sessions | Yes — series delivers maximum results |
Who should get a HydraFacial?
The HydraFacial is an excellent choice if you:
- ✦ Have generally healthy skin and want to maintain it or enhance your glow
- ✦ Have an event coming up and want immediate, visible results with zero downtime
- ✦ Have sensitive skin that doesn't tolerate acids well
- ✦ Deal with congestion, blackheads, or dehydrated skin
- ✦ Are pregnant or nursing (certain boosters may not be appropriate — discuss with Kristen)
- ✦ Want a relaxing, results-driven treatment you can do on your lunch break
Who should get a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is the better choice if you:
- ✦ Struggle with acne, breakouts, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots from past blemishes)
- ✦ Have sun damage, melasma, or uneven skin tone
- ✦ Are concerned about fine lines, texture, and early signs of aging
- ✦ Have acne scars that aren't responding to topical treatments
- ✦ Can manage a few days of peeling or redness and don't mind a recovery period
- ✦ Are ready to commit to a series of treatments for cumulative results
"Many of my clients do both — HydraFacials for maintenance and immediate results, chemical peels for deeper corrective work. They complement each other beautifully, and I often alternate them throughout a treatment series." — Kristen
Can you combine them?
Yes — and in fact, many of my Bergen County clients rotate between both as part of their annual treatment plan. I typically recommend starting with a series of chemical peels to address specific concerns (acne, pigmentation, aging), then transitioning to HydraFacials for maintenance once the skin has reached its corrective goals.
You cannot do both in the same session — your skin needs to recover from a chemical peel before receiving a HydraFacial, and vice versa. Spacing them at least 4 weeks apart is standard practice.
The bottom line: how to decide
My honest recommendation? Book a consultation first. Your skin is unique, and choosing the right treatment without a professional assessment is a bit like guessing at a medication without a diagnosis. What works beautifully for one client may not be appropriate for another — even with the same skin concern.
At The Skin Tune, every client journey begins with a skin assessment. I'll look at your skin under professional lighting, review your history, and give you a clear, honest recommendation — not upsell you into the most expensive option.
If you're in Ramsey, Mahwah, Saddle River, Allendale, or anywhere in Bergen County and trying to decide between a HydraFacial and a chemical peel, I'd love to help you figure it out. Book a consultation and let's look at your skin together.
